Welcome to the AI Industry Report, the daily brief built by AI, about AI, from the Agentic Marketing Academy. It’s Monday, July 20th. Over the weekend, the fine print on a story we’ve been tracking finally landed, so today: three stories, and the actual dollar amount behind a “free” AI agent that starts charging you by the word in eleven days. Let’s go.
Okay, remember when we told you on July 13th that Meta’s Business Agent on WhatsApp was switching to per message billing on August first? Here’s the correction. Meta’s own developer pricing documentation now confirms the agent charges per token, not per message, at two dollars for every million tokens processed. A typical customer conversation eats up twenty to twenty five thousand tokens, so you’re landing around four to five cents per conversation. Handle five thousand conversations in a month and that’s somewhere between two hundred and two hundred fifty dollars. Worth sitting with: that one rate covers both the AI’s thinking and the message delivery, so you’re not stacking two bills the way you would building this yourself. The free window that opened July first closes July thirty first, eleven days from today. And the bigger change is still coming October first, when every free form reply inside a customer conversation, human or AI, stops being free, period. If you’ve been quietly testing this agent, the meter’s about to start. If you haven’t touched it yet, this week is your cheapest way to learn what your conversations actually cost before Meta bills you for guessing wrong.
Switching gears, because this one has nothing to do with a product launch and everything to do with how your business runs day to day. A new Forbes piece points at a stat worth your attention. Fifty nine percent of workers at businesses with fewer than ten employees say their company has no clear AI policy, or they’re not sure one exists. That’s from Founder Reports’ own survey of over two thousand US workers, nearly double the rate at companies with a thousand employees or more, which sits at thirty four percent. Here’s the thing, most small businesses didn’t decide against having a policy, everyone just started using AI faster than anyone wrote the rules. The catch is regulation doesn’t care how it happened. Between the EU’s AI Act and a growing pile of US state disclosure laws, no policy is turning into a real gap, not just an oversight. My honest take, you don’t need a legal team to close this. A one page policy naming your approved tools, what client data never goes in, when you disclose AI involvement, and who reviews the work before it ships puts you ahead of most businesses your size. That’s what protects a client’s trust the day someone asks whether your last proposal was AI generated.
Quick one to close us out. OpenAI rebuilt the ChatGPT desktop app over the weekend. Chat and Work conversations now live together in one Recents list, Projects show up right inside the app, and Work conversations sync across desktop, phone, and browser. But here’s the detail that actually changes how you use it: custom instructions jumped from fifteen hundred characters to five thousand, live for Plus users too, not locked behind an enterprise plan. If you’ve ever chopped down your brand voice or your ideal client description to fit that old limit, go write the fuller version now.
So here’s your one thing for today. If your business has touched Meta’s WhatsApp agent, or you’re thinking about it, check your own conversation volume this week while it’s still free, so August first is a number you chose instead of one that surprised you.
