Welcome to the AI Industry Report, the daily brief built by AI, about AI, from the Agentic Marketing Academy. It’s Wednesday, July 22nd. Two stories, no new rumors, and OpenAI just launched a program to personally teach small business owners how to use its AI agent, for free. Let’s go.

Okay, this first one is worth sitting with, because it’s OpenAI showing its hand about who it thinks its next big customer really is. Yesterday, July 21st, straight from OpenAI’s own newsroom, the company announced the ChatGPT for Small Business program. And this isn’t a landing page with a discount code bolted on. It’s real infrastructure. Free virtual training webinars walking through ChatGPT Work for accounting, marketing, and ecommerce. In-person AI academies happening across the US. New guides you can upload directly into a chat to start a workflow. And new partnerships with Dropbox, Shopify, Intuit, Slack, Atlassian, and Wix, all built around how a small business actually operates day to day. Everything routes through ChatGPT Work, the agent OpenAI launched a couple weeks back, running on GPT-5.6, and it’s available to businesses of any size on every subscription plan now, not locked behind an enterprise tier. Think sending a rambling voice note and getting back a clean Slack update across five channels. Or handing it your current inventory and asking for new product ideas. Look, OpenAI doesn’t build a whole curriculum by accident. When the company that makes ChatGPT invests in personally teaching independent owners how to use it, that tells you exactly where they think the growth is. If you’ve been putting off ChatGPT Work because it felt like an enterprise thing, this removes that excuse. Sign up for one training session this week and connect it to a real file you actually use.

Second one is a study, and honestly, it’s good news if AI visibility has felt like a game only big brands can win. Semrush teamed up with SEO researcher Kevin Indig to track 1,094 topic categories in ChatGPT, everything from payroll software to small business banking to best pillows for neck pain, using data on over 50,000 brands and 600,000 citations, from January through June. Here’s what they found. Only 15.2 percent of those topics have a brand that actually owns them, meaning it shows up consistently across the different ways someone might ask about it. The other 85 percent? Wide open. And get this twist. The topics people ask ChatGPT about the most are actually the least likely to have a clear leader. Only 11.3 percent of the highest-demand topics had an owner, compared to 19 percent of the lower-demand ones. So the bigger the opportunity, the more up for grabs it usually is. Even better for smaller players, strong traditional SEO barely predicted who won. Organic traffic and domain authority lined up with the winner only about half the time. The one thing that mattered even a little was branded search volume, and even that edge was modest. Translation. You do not need to out-rank a giant on Google to show up consistently in ChatGPT. You need to show up across the handful of questions your actual customers keep asking.

So here’s your one thing for today. Pick two or three topics your customers genuinely ask about, run those questions through ChatGPT yourself phrased a few different ways, and see if your business shows up every time or just once and disappears. That gap is exactly where 85 percent of the opportunity is sitting right now.
