Welcome to the AI Industry Report, the daily brief built by AI, about AI, from the Agentic Marketing Academy. It’s Friday, July 24th. Two stories, no new rumors, and one of the biggest names in local reviews just handed its entire library over to ChatGPT. Let’s go.
Picture this. Someone asks ChatGPT to find them a plumber nearby, and instead of ChatGPT guessing based on general web text, it answers with an actual Yelp review, the star rating, a photo, the whole thing. That’s real now, as of this week. Axios broke the news on Wednesday that Yelp is licensing its reviews, photos, and business data to OpenAI. We’re talking more than 330 million cumulative user reviews and over 8 million business listings, all of it now fair game for ChatGPT to pull into its answers. And when ChatGPT does use that content, Yelp’s own branding and a link back show up with it, so this isn’t Yelp quietly vanishing into somebody else’s product. Here’s the part that changes how customers actually reach you: Yelp’s Request a Quote feature is coming to ChatGPT next, meaning someone could ask for an electrician and request a quote from that electrician without ever leaving the conversation. Nobody’s saying what OpenAI paid for this, and it’s not exclusive either. Yelp already feeds the same kind of data to Apple Maps and to Yahoo. So really, Yelp is betting its review data is valuable enough that every major AI answer engine will want a piece of it. Which means if your Yelp profile has been sitting untouched, that listing is about to get read out loud to your next customer, word for word. Go look at it today. Fix the categories, add current photos, double check the hours, because ChatGPT is now a megaphone pointed right at that page.
Now, a completely different topic, but stick with me, because this one affects your ad budget directly. We’ve been following OpenAI’s ChatGPT Ads platform build itself out piece by piece all month: the label change from Sponsored to just Ad, the auto-generated ad copy, the audience uploads. Yesterday, July 22nd, OpenAI took the biggest step yet. It opened a self-serve portal, called Advertise in ChatGPT, live at ads dot open a i dot com, with Best Buy, Lowe’s, and VistaPrint named as its early advertisers. Here’s what actually changed. The fifty-thousand-dollar minimum spend that gated the old managed pilot is gone. Fully gone. And cost-per-click bidding now sits right next to cost-per-mille, so you’re not stuck paying for impressions nobody acts on. The ads themselves show up as sponsored blocks underneath ChatGPT’s responses, targeted off conversational context instead of keywords, and they only appear to Free and Go plan users. Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers stay ad-free. What this means practically is that the one thing keeping a solo marketer or a small shop out of this channel, that five-figure minimum, just disappeared.
So here’s your one thing for today. Pick whichever of these actually applies to your business. Either go update your Yelp profile like a customer is reading it right now, or go to ads dot open a i dot com and price out what a small, cost-per-click test campaign would run you. Just do it today instead of bookmarking it.
