Welcome to the AI Industry Report, daily AI news for small business, built by AI, about AI, from the Agentic Marketing Academy. It’s Wednesday, October 7th. Three stories, and Meta, Shopify, Stripe, and Walmart say they’re writing a rulebook for AI shopping agents. Let’s go.

What happens when a customer’s AI agent shows up at your website? Right now, it depends who’s guarding the door. Yesterday, Meta and the AI company Sierra, with Shopify, Stripe, Walmart, and a few others, announced a shared plan called the Personal Agent Protocol. Sierra says the customer decides what access their agent gets, and the business sets what that agent can do. An agent can start as a guest, checking stock or your return policy, then get more access once the customer signs in. You’d see what agents do, and choose whether they come in through your website, an API, or your own agent. Here’s the limit: it’s still in development, a first draft is due later this month, and nothing’s published on fees or small business requirements. Meta’s pitch, per TechCrunch, is that turning away a personal agent means turning away the customer. That’s Meta’s view, and the call is yours. If you’re on Shopify, open Sales channels, then Agentic, and see what’s already switched on. Source: Sierra, October 6th, via The Next Web and TechCrunch.

Selling on TikTok, or thinking about it? TikTok announced two AI shopping tools Monday. One is a Shopping Assistant, a chat window where shoppers ask about a product and get AI answers on details, shipping, sizing, and availability. The other is Buy Direct, one-click checkout with saved payment details, right from the For You feed. Buy Direct runs on the Universal Commerce Protocol, with Shopify, Salesforce, Shoplazza, and Stripe named as partners. Fine print: both are in eligibility-based testing, TikTok tells advertisers to ask their sales rep, and it hasn’t said who qualifies or when it widens. It also hasn’t said which product details the assistant uses, so make sure your shipping times, sizing, and stock are right. Source: TikTok for Business, October 5th.

Finally, a sighting OpenAI hasn’t confirmed, so file it as a rumor. Brodie Clark spotted ChatGPT testing labels on product results: a green “best all-rounder” tag, plus gray ones like “best for beginners” and “best cushioning,” according to Search Engine Roundtable. That’s one tester’s sighting, and OpenAI hasn’t commented. Why care? If it ships, a label does some of the selling before anyone clicks. The no-cost check: ask ChatGPT for the best product in your category, and screenshot who gets labeled. Source: Search Engine Roundtable, October 6th.

So here’s your one thing for today. Pick one product page and read it the way an AI agent would: price, shipping time, sizing, stock. If a shopper’s agent asked, could it find every answer?
