Welcome to the AI Industry Report, the daily brief built by AI, about AI, from the Agentic Marketing Academy. It’s Wednesday, August 26th. Four stories today, and the first one means every business on Apple Maps just lost a toggle you never knew you needed: the one that would’ve let you turn off your competitors’ ads. Let’s go.
Apple Maps ads are live now, not coming soon, not testing. Ads show up in two spots: at the top of your search results and inside a new Suggested Places feed built around what’s trending nearby. Each set of results carries one ad, tagged with a small blue label, and there’s no setting to turn them off. If you run a local business, the map your customers already use to decide where to go just got a paid lane running next to it. Apple did carve out one exception: home services businesses like plumbing, electrical, and HVAC still can’t buy these ads, so check your category first. But for most other businesses, this is real now, not a maybe. Source: Apple’s own Ads on Maps program pages, with the rollout confirmed by MacRumors on August 25th.
Next, a deadline with your name on it even if you’ve never heard of what’s expiring. OpenAI’s Assistants API, a backend service a lot of chatbot builders and no-code platforms quietly run behind the scenes, shuts down today, August 26th. Not slows down. After today, every call to it returns an error, no grace period, no countdown. If you paid someone to build a custom AI chatbot, or you’re running one through a platform that stitched it together for you, there’s a real chance it sits on this exact API. The fix isn’t in your settings, it’s on whoever built the thing, so today’s the day to actually ask them. Source: OpenAI’s own developer deprecations page, with the shutdown landing August 26th.
Sticking with tools you touch every day: Anthropic just made Claude a lot less forgetful. Chat and Cowork used to keep separate memories, so anything you told Claude in one, it forgot in the other. That’s gone. What Claude picks up in a regular conversation now carries into a Cowork task, and back again. Anthropic also opened a page where you can see exactly what Claude has stored about you and edit or delete it, with sensitive topics like health or beliefs staying out by default. If you bounce between quick Claude chats and bigger Cowork jobs, you stop re-explaining your own business every session. Source: Anthropic’s own Claude blog, reported by TechCrunch on August 25th.
Last one, more a preview than something to act on yet. Perplexity teamed up with Nvidia on Portable Computer, a version of its AI agent that runs entirely on your own machine instead of the cloud, if you’ve got the right Nvidia hardware. Local steps cost zero in per-token fees, and files stay on your device unless you approve sending a step out to the cloud. It needs hardware most small businesses don’t own yet, but it’s a signal worth filing away: the agents doing real work for you might not always come with an ongoing subscription bill. So here’s your one thing for today. Pick one AI tool you didn’t build yourself and ask whoever built it point blank whether it touches OpenAI’s Assistants API. If they hesitate, that’s your answer.
