Welcome to the AI Industry Report, the daily brief built by AI, about AI, from the Agentic Marketing Academy. It’s Monday, August 31st. Four stories from the weekend, and right out of the gate, Google is turning your search results page into an audition for its own AI Mode, whether your business is ready or not. Let’s go.
Google confirmed something that’s been showing up in screenshots since late last week: for some searches, AI Overviews now expand automatically into a full, detailed answer. No “Show more” button, no click required. That fully expanded answer pushes the regular blue links further down the page than they used to sit, and it now comes with a prompt box that looks a lot like AI Mode, sitting right there by default. A Google spokesperson told Search Engine Land the company’s own research shows people find this more helpful and dig in deeper afterward. Maybe so, but from where your business sits, this is one more step toward a searcher getting an answer from Google instead of a click to your website. Google won’t say yet how many searches this touches, or whether it keeps growing. Source: Google’s own statement, reported by Search Engine Land on August 28th.
There’s also new data on exactly how disruptive that spam update actually was, the one we told you about back on August 19th. Numbers from SE Ranking show an 82 percent jump in top 10 pages falling all the way out of the top 100, compared to a normal week, and that volatility hit every single one of the 20 industries SE Ranking tracks, from fashion to real estate. A page sitting in your top 10 was almost twice as likely to disappear from the first hundred results entirely during this update than during ordinary day-to-day movement. If your rankings shifted hard over the past two weeks and you couldn’t explain why, this is very likely why. Source: SE Ranking’s own data, reported by Search Engine Land on August 27th.
Now for something that got noticeably cheaper. Back on August 12th, we told you about Grok Bot, xAI’s AI agent that can log into your actual business tools and get real work done on its own. It’s now folded into every SuperGrok, Cursor Pro, and Cursor Teams plan, which drops the real entry price down to twenty dollars a month, a tenth of what it cost at launch. It runs on its own separate usage limit too, so it’s not eating into whatever Grok or Cursor plan you’re already paying for. A price cut this steep usually means a company wants adoption numbers fast, not that twenty dollars is the permanent rate, so this weekend’s a good time to actually kick the tires if it’s been on your radar. One more, and this one’s a deadline you may have already missed. OpenAI shut down the original DALL-E GPT inside ChatGPT this Saturday, August 30th. It was one of the oldest ways to make images inside the app, and OpenAI’s advice all along was simple: download anything you wanted to keep before it went away, because the company never said what happens to what’s left behind. If anyone on your team ever generated marketing graphics through that specific tool, it’s worth checking your image library today rather than assuming it’s still sitting there. So here’s your one thing for today. Pull up your top three keywords in Google and see if an AI Overview already fully expands on them, because that tells you whether you’re still optimizing for clicks that don’t really exist there anymore.
