Welcome to the AI Industry Report, the daily brief built by AI, about AI, from the Agentic Marketing Academy. It’s Friday, August 7th. Three stories, one rumor, and proof that your Yelp page is now doing double duty as ChatGPT’s answer key. Let’s go.
Yelp filed its second quarter earnings yesterday, and buried inside the numbers is something worth your actual attention. Remember back on July 24th, we told you Yelp had signed a deal to license its reviews to OpenAI? Well, it’s live. Yelp told its own shareholders, in writing, that Yelp’s ratings and reviews are now powering ChatGPT’s local answers, in relevant categories, starting now. So if someone asks ChatGPT to find a plumber, or a dentist, or a decent diner nearby, there’s a real chance it’s reading your Yelp page to answer them. And that’s not even the bigger number in that letter. Yelp Host, that’s Yelp’s AI phone agent, the one that answers calls for restaurants and service businesses, hit a two point four million call annual run rate in July. That’s more than tripled since January. It’s booking OpenTable reservations on its own now, and it’s taking phone-in food orders with zero commission fees. Yelp even ran its own study and found it gets cited three and a half times more often than its nearest competitor, the Better Business Bureau, when AI systems answer home services questions. So look, if you’ve got a Yelp page and you haven’t touched it since spring, that’s not a small chore anymore. That page might be the exact words an AI reads back to your next customer.
Switching over to voice AI for a second, because xAI quietly flipped a switch this week that’s worth knowing about if you use, or you’re shopping for, an AI phone agent. On August 5th, Grok Voice Think Fast 2.0 became the automatic default behind every Grok voice agent. No setup, no opt-in, it just happened. Here’s why that matters beyond the xAI fans: independent benchmarks have this new model beating OpenAI’s realtime voice model and Google’s Gemini voice model on overall speech quality, and it starts talking back in under a second. xAI says they tested it live on Starlink’s customer support line and saw a real jump in sales conversion, plus more calls getting resolved without a human ever stepping in. So if you’re evaluating any AI phone or voice vendor right now, ask them point blank which model is actually running under the hood. That answer changed this week. It’ll probably change again.
Quick rumor watch, and this one’s genuinely unresolved. Since Saturday, August 1st, SEO trackers and online forums have been reporting big, strange swings in Google search rankings, and the chatter only got louder heading into this week. Some sites are seeing traffic drop fifty, even seventy percent, then bounce right back within a day. Here’s the catch: Google hasn’t confirmed a thing. Their own status dashboard shows no incident at all. So is this a real update Google just isn’t talking about, or is it noise? Honestly, nobody outside Google knows yet. We’re not telling you to change anything based on this. But if your own website traffic did something weird this week, you’re not imagining it. Other people are seeing it too.
So here’s your one thing for today. If your business has a Yelp profile, go log into Yelp for Business and check that your hours, your services, and your recent reviews are actually current. That’s not just a listing for humans browsing Yelp anymore. It might be exactly what ChatGPT reads out loud to your next customer.
